The problem, in most pharma functions, is not a lack of data. Oncology generates more data than ever. The problem is a lack of continuity and context — important decisions still rely on sources that see different parts of the market, each with its own blind spot.
It's worth recognizing what each source really delivers:
- Clinical trials explain possibility: efficacy and safety under defined conditions — they were not designed, alone, to show real practice.
- Transactional data explains activity: claims and sales size up utilization, but tend to have little clinical depth.
- Surveys explain perception: opinion and intent matter, but can diverge from the behavior recorded in practice.
- Snapshots explain a moment: a one-off study can be precise and still become outdated when guideline, approval or competition change.
The cost of invisibility
When the market changes continuously, episodic intelligence creates periods of invisibility between one measurement and the next decision. In Brazil this is even more critical: public and private systems have their own paths of diagnosis, testing, authorization and reimbursement — the average hides differences that define strategy.
The journey is where strategy becomes observable
The real patient journey connects clinical facts to business consequences. Each transition — diagnosis, test, authorization, start, switch, progression — can reveal unrecognized eligibility, delay, an access barrier or a shift in physician preference. The goal is not to measure everything: it is to identify the journey changes that change a strategic decision.
That is the difference between a study and a living intelligence system. It is not about repeating the same survey every month, but about preserving the thread between observed evidence, signal of change, business implication and decision.
Start from the decision, not the dashboard
RWD only creates value when it changes a decision. The analytical design should start from the business question — not from the screen. The most valuable question is usually exactly the one your current data still cannot answer.
